2024 Association of Energy Engineers World Energy Conference

The Increasing Role of BESS and VPPs to Drive Strategies for Clean, Reliable, Flexible, Low-Cost Power at the Grid Edge in the session titled Microgrids and Renewables

According to McKinsey’s Global Energy Perspective 2023: Power outlook: “power demand is projected to double by 2050 due to the electrification of low- to medium-heat processes, as well as growth in demand from data centers. Similarly, power demand in buildings is projected to double.”

This significant increase in demand will require generation capacity far greater than all the renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) installed in the US today in an environment where utilities are reaching the upward permissible boundaries to rate base requiring further infrastructure upgrades. Furthermore, this increasing supply-demand imbalance underscores the integral role of battery energy storage systems (BESS), microgrids, and virtual power plants (VPPs) to ensure reliable and efficient grid operations.

In this session, Tad Piper, Chief Commercial Officer of truCurrent, will outline the strategies, processes, and policies required for today’s C&I, and large energy consumers to meet their energy needs within the context of an evolving grid and regulations. Piper will discuss and illustrate a path forward with use cases and examples to help large and growing energy consumers seize control of their own energy transition.
